(n,γ) research in the fifties
Description
Neutron research in the fifties, prompted by atomic energy development, and with the stimulus of the coming of the national laboratories, created a huge new body of knowledge, new experimental techniques, and theoretical insight. The capture γ-ray work confirmed much of what had been forseen in the thirties by Rasetti, Kikuchi and his associates, Fleischmann, and others. It started with the use of Compton spectrometers in Russia, and a pair spectrometer in Canada, and later adaptions of magnetic spectrometers with coincidence counting methods by Motz, and others. Probably the most interesting result, not forseen in the thirties, was the identification and measurement of electric dipole radiation. The surge of experimental effort which commenced with the fifties, carried on into the 60's. An attempt will be made to trace its influence over the years on the development of research establishments and universities
