The development of planning and management system for the transportation of Low-Level radioactive Waste

Description
The Low-Level radioactive Waste (LLW) produced at nuclear power station in Japan have conventionally been stored at the site of each nuclear power station, and the total volume of LLW reached the level of about half a million drums (containing 200 liters each). Under these circumstances, Japan's first LLW to facilities (Rokkasho LLW Disposal Center of Japan Nuclear Fuel Ltd.) outside of the nuclear power station for disposal is in progress. This system was developed to support safe and positive implementation of the LLW transporting operations. It is used for preparation of transporting planning in the interactive mode using a mouse in a full color display picture of high resolution and for management of volume data related to LLW transportation by making use of a Relational Database. A period of three years was required for completion of this system from start of examination of system concept through concrete system design, fabrication and testing. It has been in satisfactory operation for about seven months after completion of the operation test on the field. These achievements will be fully utilized for materialization of ocean transportation of high level radioactive waste, spent fuel and so forth which is anticipated to become necessary in future.
