Nuclear energy policy in the United Kingdom
Description
The nuclear power generation in the United Kingdom has borne a role of supplying the base power load, by the development of Calder Hall reactors, magnox reactors and AGRs. CEGB proposed in 1977 a thermal reactor line by the development of PWRs to take the place of AGRs. It is decided by the result of a public hearing whether the first PWR plant should be constructed or not. According to a statement by the Government in 1979, another 15,000 MW of nuclear power is required by the year 2000. BNFL now forwards its plan of expanding its nuclear fuel cycle by investing 3,000 million pounds in the next ten years. High-level wastes are solidified in glass, and the products will be stored on the ground semipermanently. (Mori, K.)
