Description of the clinical behavior of patients with Wilms tumor treated at the Servicio de Oncologia Pediatrica of the Hospital Nacional de Ninos from January 1991 to December 2011

The clinical and epidemiological characteristics of the patients diagnosed with Wilms' tumor in the Servicio de Oncologia Pediatrica of the Hospital Nacional de Ninos from January 1991 to December 2011 were described. The files of children from 0 to 13 years old with a diagnosis of Wilms' tumor confirmed by biopsy were reviewed. The clinical characteristics, the chemotherapy used, the evolution and the overall survival and disease-free at 5 years of each patient were analyzed. Similar clinical characteristics reported in international studies are presented in patients with Wilms' tumor in Costa Rica. The overall survival shown is closer to that of developed countries. The realization of changes in the management of patients with this pathology in the country were allowed with this study

Abstract (Spanish)

Las caracteristicas clinicas y epidemiologicas de los pacientes diagnosticados con Tumor de Wilms en el Servicio de Oncologia Pediatrica del Hospital Nacional de Ninos de enero de 1991 a diciembre del 2011 fueron descritas. Los expedientes de ninos de 0 a 13 anos con diagnostico de Tumor de Wilms confirmado por biopsia fueron revisados. Las caracteristicas clinicas, la quimioterapia utilizada, la evolucion y la sobrevida global y libre de enfermedad a 5 anos de cada paciente fueron analizadas. Caracteristicas clinicas similares reportadas en estudios internacionales son presentadas en pacientes con Tumor de Wilms en Costa Rica. La sobrevida global mostrada se acerca mas a la de paises desarrollados. La realizacion de cambios en el manejo de los pacientes con esta patologia en el pais fueron permitidos con este estudio
