Description

BC Hydro's Integrated Electricity Plan (IEP) provides strategic direction to meet future electricity needs. BC Hydro's integrated electric system includes hydroelectric generation resources which supply more than 10,000 megawatts of generating capacity and nearly 47,000 GWh of energy per year from 29 hydroelectric facilities. This IEP identifies the initiatives that BC Hydro plans to undertake over the next four years to ensure reliable, least cost electricity supply in an environmentally sound manner over the next 20 years. The IEP includes a contingency plan which highlights measures that will manage risks and uncertainties. BC Hydro plans to continue current programs such as the Power Smart and Resource Smart. The utility will further study Resource Smart options at Revelstoke and Mica. It will work with British Columbia Transmission Corp. to maintain transmission project in-service dates for the Vancouver Island and Interior-to-Lower Mainland corridors. In the fall of 2004, the utility will initiate a call for energy from independent power producers. Other new projects will include the Power Smart capacity based programs, rate programs and the Peace River Site C hydroelectric project. The utility will improve its electricity planning and portfolio management processes, such as improving forecasts and modelling tools. A contingency plan is included to respond to uncertainties in customer demand and the future of existing supply at Burrard Thermal Generating Station. The contingency plan will respond to gas and electricity market conditions, technology innovation and new resource options. 4 tabs., 5 figs
