Comparative effectiveness of Ca-DTPA, desferrioxamine B and their combination in removing transuranium elements from rats

  • 1. Kernforschungszentrum Karlsruhe (Germany, F.R.). Inst. fuer Strahlenbiologie

Description

Prompt chelation therapy after incorporation of 239Pu, 241Am, 242Cm and 252Cf, respectively, was tested in rats. For 239Pu, especially in the bone, desferrioxamine-B-methane sulfonate (DFOA) is superior to calcium diethylenetriaminepentaacetate (Ca-DTPA): the combination of both is equally effective as DFOA, but the presence of Ca-DTPA prevents translocation of 239Pu to the kidneys occurring with DFOA alone. DFOA further decreases retention of 252Cf in the liver, but it does not affect tissue retention of 241Am and 242Cm. (author)
