Effect of turbulence models on thermal-hydraulics in targets of accelerator driven systems

Thermal-hydraulics in targets for the Accelerator Driven System (ADS) using Lead-Bismuth Eutectic (LBE) as a coolant were analyzed numerically to obtain the fundamental acknowledge and experience on the analytical methods of liquid-metal cooling and complex channel geometry. Three types of target geometries were proposed and three kinds of k-ε turbulence models were chosen to perform the present numerical study. An effect of turbulence models to the target geometries was clarified and it was found that the present analytical approach is very effective to predict the performance of the ADS targets because of the difficulty of the experiments. However, further analytical studies are needed to identify and evaluate the optimum target geometry and design to minimize thermal loads and pressure drops, and to avoid hot-spots and flow instabilities.
