Perpendicular eν mass from W decay

Description
Properties of the perpendicular eν mass, defined in terms of transverse momenta p-vectorsub(T) by Msub(T)sup(2)(eν) = 2|p-vectorsub(eT)| |p-vectorsub(νT)| - 2p-vectorsub(eT).p-vectorsub(νT), that make it particularly well suited to W mass and width determinations are examined. An analytic expression for its distribution in W production and subsequent W → eν decay at p-barp colliders, accurate to order approximately equal to 1% is given. A maximum likelihood fit of this formula to the five UA1 events gives Msub(W) = 80.3 +- 36 GeV. (author)
