Description
A theory is derived for the internal kink mode in a tokamak with two resonant surfaces, on which the safety factor becomes equal to unity. A general condition for the stability of the perturbations of interest is derived. A dispersion relation describing both ideal and resistive kink modes is derived. Analytic calculations are carried out for perturbations which are localized near the tokamak axis. In standard ideal hydrodynamics, such perturbations are unstable for the typical nonmonotonic current profiles
