  • 1. Atomic Energy Commission, Damascus (Syrian Arab Republic). Dept. of Physics

Description

This study aims to explore the physical principles of plasma display panels, its technology and applications, to highlight the physical fundaments of the dielectric barrier discharge which is used in these displays. The physical fundaments and configurations of the dielectric barrier discharge were demonstrated, and some applications of it in different fields were mentioned such are: plasma displays, ozone generation, Co2 lasers, excimer lamps, pollution control, surface modification and coating. The fundamental principles, preparation conditions, the plasma display operation and its fabrications and performances were defined. Also the gas mixtures and the use materials for plasma display fabrication, the UV and visible radiation generation and the yield of second emission were all reviewed. In addition to that, the plasma displays were compared with the liquid crystals displays and cathodic ray tubes (CRT) displays concerning the following features: contrast rate, color saturation, view angles, service time, energy consumption, the obtained radiation level and the response time. Some of the plasma displays available in the local and international markets were demonstrated. (author)
