The metallurgy, the physical and mechanical properties of zirconium and its alloys, the remarkable corrosion resistance properties in numerous aggressive environments such as strong acids, alkalies, organic environments and salts, which place zirconium above stainless steels and titanium, are described. Then are presented the working properties, with the various methods of forming by bending and stamping, etc., and the assembly welding and machining techniques to terminate with the general principles of the design of apparatus made from zirconium. In each case, the particularities of this metal and the precautions to be taken if the best is to be obtained from this promising chemical engineering material, which has been widely used for more than thirty years in nuclear reactor cores, are highlighted. 9 tabls., 22 figs., 63 refs
Abstract (French)
Apres presentation de la metallurgie et des proprietes physiques et mecaniques du zirconium et de ses alliages, on decrit les remarquables proprietes de resistance a la corrosion dans de nombreux milieux agressifs comme les acides forts, les alcalis, les milieux organiques et les sels qui placent le zirconium au-dessus des aciers inoxydables et du titane. On presente ensuite les proprietes de mise en oeuvre avec les differentes methodes de conformation par pliage, par emboutissage, etc... et les techniques d'assemblage par soudage et par usinage, pour terminer par les principes generaux de conception des appareils chaudronnes en zirconium. Dans chaque cas, on s'attache a bien mettre en evidence les particularites de ce metal et les precautions a prendre si l'on veut tirer le meilleur parti de ce materiau prometteur en genie chimique et largement utilise depuis plus de trente ans dans le coeur des reacteurs nucleairesAdditional details
