Description

A CR-39 track detector was used both ad a target and a detector to study the interaction of 960 A MeV 238U ions with light nuclei (1H, 12C, 16O). The range mean free path and cross section of 960 A MeV 238U ions in CR-39 have been found to be 6.8 cm, 4.33 cm amd 2160 mb respectively. The average multiplicity due to fragmentation of 238U projectiles with light nuclei has been found to be 2.03. It is shown that the most common mode of interaction is binary fission. The reaction products consist of two track peaks according to track diameter distribution. The ratio of track density of each peak to track density of reaction products comes out to by 20% and 80% respectively
