Minimum critical mass systems

  • 1. Interuniversitair Reactor Inst., Delft (Netherlands)

Description

An analysis is presented of thermal systems with minimum critical mass, based on the use of materials with optimum neutron moderating and reflecting properties. The optimum fissile material distributions in the systems are obtained by calculations with standard computer codes, extended with a routine for flat fuel importance search. It is shown that in the minimum critical mass configuration a considerable part of the fuel is positioned in the reflector region. For 239Pu a minimum critical mass of 87 g is found, which is the lowest value reported hitherto. (author)
