Process for manufacturing boron carbide pellets that can be used for the realization, of the control rods of water reactors

Description

The subject of the invention is a process for manufacturing boron carbide pellets with a boron carbide content of not less than 68% by volume and having an open porosity. This process consists in (a) preparing a mix comprising boron carbide powder of which at least 90% of the particles are under 3 μ in size, and an organic binder that can be transformed into carbon by thermal treatment, (b) compressing the hot mix thus obtained to form unbaked pellets, under a pressure of 1000 to 6000 bars, at a temperature of 80 to 2500C and (c) submitting the unbaked pellets thus obtained to vacuum thermal treatment to transform this binder into porous carbon. The finished pellets are used in the control rods of water reactors

Abstract (French)

L'invention a pour objet un procede de fabrication de pastilles en carbure de bore ayant une teneur en carbure de bore d'au moins 68% en volume et presentant une porosite ouverte. Ce procede consiste: a preparer un melange comprenant de la poudre de carbure de bore dont au moins 90% des particules ont une granulometrie inferieure a 3μ, et un liant organique susceptible d'etre transforme en carbone par traitement thermique; a comprimer a chaud le melange ainsi obtenu pour former des pastilles crues, sous une pression de 1000 a 6000 bars, a une temperature de 80 a 2500C, et a soumettre les pastilles crues ainsi obtenues a un traitement thermique sous vide pour transformer ledit liant en carbone poreux.
