Moving beyond the dependence on Russian fossil energies - Brief from the Academy of Technologies - 24/03/22

After an overview of the origins and type of energies imported by the EU from other countries, of their cost, of the Russian trade balance (oil and gas exports, imports), and of the destination of Russian exports, this publication examines and discusses a possible short-term policy with a short-term reduction of consumptions, a reduction of Russian oil consumptions, a filling of gas tanks, and a decrease of the burden for consumers. Then, it discusses what a medium-term policy could be: increase of the CO₂ price, acceleration of savings in carbonised energy, quick adaptation of the decarbonized electric power production fleet, choice between stoppage of nuclear power plants or putting some into service again (in France and out of France), and improvement of the cross-border network of gas transport
