Interaction of radiation with matter

Creators

Description

Attenuation coefficients and density are physical characteristics of matter essential for radiation shielding and dose calculations. Mass attenuation coefficients are listed in this chapter for a continuum of photon energy interactions with pertinent elements found in shielding materials and tissue. Specific mass attenuation coefficients are provided for materials such as concrete, lucite, polyethylene, Bakelite, Pyrex glass and lead as well as tissues such as bone and muscle. The attenuation coefficients for the three mechanisms by which radiation interacts with matter (photoelectric, Compton and pair production) are provided in graphical form for air, lead and water
