Electron spectroscopy study on Gd/Fe alloy films

  • 1. IBM Research Laboratory, San Jose, California, USA

Description

Co - sputtered amorphous Gd/Fe alloy films, although prepared under UHV (but subsequently exposed to air), contained Fe in metallic but Gd only in oxide form (Gd2O3) throughout the entire film thickness, as determined by XPS and sputtering profiling. This conclusion is drawn from a comparison with well defined oxide species of both metals. The Fe3s multiplet - splitting is the same as with pure iron, indicating that no intermetallic charge transfer occurs. (Auth.)
