Fast determination of 90Sr in the waters surrounding the nuclear power plant

Description
A simple and fast method was developed for determination of 90Sr in high volumes of water samples. For determination of 90Sr was used solid phase extraction (SPE) using commercial sorbent AnaLig(R) Sr-01 from company IBC Advanced Technologies, Inc. Determination of 90Sr was performed with dilute solution of HNO3 and NaOH. To achieve fast determination, vacuum system was applied, which brings significant reduction of separation time. The aim of this study was development of less expensive, time- and energy-saving method for determination of 90Sr in comparison with conventional methods. Radiochemical strontium yield was traced by using radionuclide 85Sr. Samples were measured with HPGe detector at energy Eγ = 514 keV. By using AnaLig(R) Sr-01 yields in range 72 - 96 % were achieved. Separation based on SPE using AnaLig(R) Sr-01 employing utilization of vacuum system offers fast and effective method for determination of 90Sr in water matrix. After ingrowth of yttrium samples were measured by Liquid Scintillation Spectrometer Packard Tricarb 2900 TR with software Quanta Smart. (authors)
