Description

The effect of chemical composition and heat treatment on the coercivity of SmCo5 sintered magnets has been studied using a series of six alloys with composition near to that of stoichiometric SmCo5. The great increase of coercivity for heat treatments around 850 C occurs with negligible change in the SmCo5 lattice parameters or anisotropy field. The anisotropy field of SmCo5 was redetermined from measurements in dc magnetic fields up to 33 T. It was found that HA is around 50-55 T, considerably higher than previously reported values, and this value is practically unaffected by chemical composition or heat treatments. The Co-rich section of the Sm-Co phase diagram is redrawn, based on lattice parameter data, metallographic observation of the samples, and differential thermal analysis (DTA). The Sm5Co19 phase is added to the phase diagram as a stable phase. (orig.)
