Cyclotron emission and beaming-mechanisms in magnetized neutron stars: Her X-1

Description

The recently reported feature at 53 keV in Her X1, if interpreted as cyclotron emission, imposes restrictions on the possible beaming mechanisms. Pencil beam schemes seem ruled out, while occultation schemes may work, but only in conjunction with a fan-beam scheme. Pure fan-beam schemes probably offer the most satisfactory and simple mechanism. (orig.)

Abstract (German)

Die vor kurzem berichtete Beobachtung bei 53 keV in Her X1 beschraenkt die moeglichen Strahlungsmechanismen, wenn sie als Zyklotronemission interpretiert wird. Federhalter-Strahlmodelle scheinen ausgeschlossen zu sein, waehrend Bedeckungsmodelle moeglich sind, jedoch nur in Verbindung mit einem Fan-Strahlmodell. Reine Fan-Strahlmodelle liefern moeglicherweise den befriedigendsten und einfachsten Mechanismus. (orig.)
