Automatic evaluation of ultrasonic images

Description

Ultrasonics is a technique wide-spread for the non-destructive testing of fibre reinforced plastics. Up to now, the resulting pictures are subjectively evaluated by an expert. At the Institute of Machine Tools and Production Engineering (WZL) of the RWTH Aachen a new technique has been developed which allows the automatic evaluation of ultrasonic pictures. This guarantees objective and reproducable results, which is a basic assumption for a complete automation of the ultrasonic testing in the future. (orig.)

Abstract (German)

Bei der zerstoerungsfreien Werkstoffpruefung von Faserverbundwerkstoffen wird oft die Ultraschalltechnik eingesetzt. Die dabei entstehenden Bilder werden bisher von Experten ausgewertet und subjektiv beurteilt. Am Laboratorium fuer Werkzeugmaschinen und Betriebslehre (WZL) der RWTH Aachen wurde ein neues Verfahren entwickelt, das eine automatische Auswertung von Ultraschallbildern ermoeglicht. Die gewonnenen Ergebnisse sind objektiv und reproduzierbar, womit eine Grundvoraussetzung fuer die zukuenftige, vollstaendige Automatisierung der Ultraschallpruefung erfuellt ist. (orig.)
