Investigation of tribological properties of the engines of comercial vehicles with particular consideration of air filtration

A testing method to be applied under operational conditions has been developed on the basis of gamma spectrometry of neutron-activated abrasion products. It is aimed at determining the wear properties of internal combustion engines. The impact of abrasion on the lifetime has been determined. By improving the air filtration it was possible to approach the potential lifetime of the engines, to reduce the pollution of the lubricating oil, and to increase the service life of the oil by a factor of two.
