Influence of chloride - ions on electrochemical properties of aluminum alloys with strontium

Most of the metal elements are alloyed with aluminum, but only a few of them play the role of the main alloying components in industrial aluminum alloys. Nevertheless, a significant number of elements are used as additives to improve the properties of aluminum alloys. One of the effective ways to protect alloys from oxidation is alloying the alloy with metal additives that improve the structure of protective oxide film. Beryllium is one of these elements and its use is known to protect aluminum-containing alloys from oxidation. Alloys of aluminum with calcium and strontium are widely used in the deoxidation and modification of steel, as well as in the preparation of a number of complex alloys. This is due to the fact that both components of such alloys have high oxygen properties. All this facilitates the access of oxygen to the metal surface and accelerates the oxidation process. Strontium-containing alloys cause great difficulties due to their high affinity for atmospheric oxygen at metallurgical production temperatures. In this regard, the work studies the possibility of protection against oxidation of strontium-containing alloys by microalloying with beryllium additives. It has been determined that alloying with beryllium increases the electrochemical corrosion of aluminum-strontium alloys. When doping with strontium an aluminum-beryllium alloy, the corrosion rate decreases. (author)
