Description

During the past decade, increased public and governmental concern has been focused on environmental and safety impacts of nuclear facilities that generate, treat, handle and store hazardous materials including mixed radioactive wastes. These concerns have been progressively translated to a variety of federal and state regulatory programs. Only recently have the regulatory agencies started addressing the statutes and regulatory guidelines for 'mixed' radioactive and hazardous wastes. RCRA provides regulatory guidance and statutes for hazardous waste and mixed wastes. The 1984 ANSI/ANS 40.35 Standard for Volume Reduction of Low Level Radioactive Waste has been revised and updated including applicable and appropriate federal regulatory requirements/policy for mixed waste treatment/handling facilities and for industry design standards to meet the added complexity for managing mixed wastes. The Standard's objective is to establish a basis for uniform practices and minimum requirements for the design, construction and operation of LLRW and mixed waste volume reduction systems. These recommendations and requirements are intended to apply to federal, state and commercial nuclear facilities where appropriate
