Retention of certain radwaste nuclides from nitric acid medium using cerium (IV) antimonate cation exchanger
- 1. Atomic Energy Authority, Cairo (Egypt). Hot Laboratories Centre
Description
Cerium (IV) antimonate ion exchangers are prepared by mixing 0.1M solution of both antimony (V) chloride and cerium IV ammonium nitrate in volume ratios of 0.5, 0.75, 133 and 2.39. The chemical composition, solubility, infrared Spectra, X-ray patterns and thermal analysis of the product materials are conducted. The distribution of the cations Na+, Cs+, Sr2+ and Eu3+ from nitric acid solutions on cerium (IV) antimonate ion exchanger is investigated as a function of the composition and drying temperature of the exchanger, nitric acid concentration, temperature and the effect of γ-radiation on the ion exchange properties of CeSb. The exchange properties of cerium (IV) antimonates are improved, the greater the Sb/Ce molar ratios and the higher drying temperature. The irradiated cerium (IV) antimonate has been successfully used for the quantitative separation of cesium which suggests its use in the treatment of active liquid wastes
