Electron diffusion in argon in a finite enclosure: the effect of diffusion cooling

Description

The diffusion cooling of electrons has been observed in a set of experiments designed to measure the diffusion coefficient for thermal electrons in argon by CAVALLERI'S direct density sampling technique. Large effects were observed in a cylindrical volume 75mm in diameter and 30 mm in length containing the gas at pressure of 2.0 to 8.0 kPa under conditions that ensured the free diffusion of the electrons. J.H.PARKER'S theory of diffusion cooling has been generalised to treat the case of a momentum transfer cross section with an arbitrary energy dependence. There is good agreement between theory and experiment. (Auth.)
