The tokamaks TFTR, JT60 and JET
Description
Three large tokamaks in the several megampere discharge current range are at present under construction. They are JET (Europe), TFTR (USA), and JT60 (Japan). The parameters of these three machines have been chosen with different scientific objectives in mind; these will be outlined and compared. The performance to be expected in these machines in the light of our best present knowledge will be discussed. The information to be expected from these machines on the key issues of containment, impurities, plasma beta and alpha-particle effects will be outlined. Finally, we relate this to the requirements of the on-going programme in particular to the design and construction of the next generation, the tritium burners
