Progress of the heavy ions program at CERN
Description
The aim of the ion program at CERN SPS is the search of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) in the nucleon-nucleon collisions at ultra-relativistic energies. Recent results on these collisions with sulphur beam are presented and compared with previous data obtained from oxygen beam experiments. It is reasonable to search for the possible signatures, suggested for quark-gluon plasma formation like abnormal behavior, in global features (PT rise, multiplicity fluctuations) or in exclusive channels (strange particle production, resonance 'melting', direct photons). Beam dependence of the parameters relevant to the QGP search is discussed. (K.A.) 16 refs.; 12 figs
