A study of the interaction of tritium with liquid Li17Pb83

  • 1. Association Euratom-Kernforschungsanlage Juelich G.m.b.H. (Germany, F.R.)

Description

The lithium-lead alloy Li17Pb83 was irradiated in a fission reactor to give concentrations of tritium within the range 1-50 p.p.m. by total atoms. The concentration of tritium in the irradiated alloys was determined by combustion in oxygen followed by liquid scintillation counting. The composition of the gas released upon fusion of the irradiated alloy in vacuum was determined by mass spectrometric Knudsen effusion analysis. The principal species detected were found to be HT, HTO and T2; the ratios of these were dependent on the tritium concentration and the purity of the alloy sample. Sieverts constant of tritium for this alloy was determined as (5.82 +- 1.8)103 atmsup(1/2); which is in accordance with that found for deuterium in the same alloy. (author)
