Future directions and emerging techniques for ISOL systems
Description
Isotope separator on-line (ISOL) systems have been in use for over 20 years and have made an enormous contribution to our knowledge of nuclei. However, these past efforts have acquired only a modest fraction of the potential nuclear data of value in fundamental and applied nuclear science. It now appears, through the use of new ISOL techniques that have been developed or are being developed, that the frontiers of knowledge about nuclei far from stability can be extended considerably. The authors discuss the current status and future promise of ISOL systems, with emphasis on newly conceived experimental capabilities and interests. In addition to studies of nuclear structure using traditional or new on-line approaches, such as on-line nuclear orientation, we point out the possibilities for studies with accelerated radioactive beams that have direct application to basic problems in materials science and astrophysics as well as to nuclear theory
