On the interpretation of a giant resonance of nuclear photoabsorption

Description

A geometrical interpretation of the giant resonance of nuclear photoabsorption is suggested in which a nucleus is considered to be a spherical resonator. The eigenfrequency of the resonator is inversely proportional to its radius. From the empirical systematics of the giant dipole resonance energy there was obtained the value for the optical refractive index of γ-rays in nuclear matter
