Description
Crystallization of an MgO-Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/-SiO/sub 2/-ZrO/sub 2/ sintered glass frit was studied. Heat treatment at 8500 or 9000C caused initial crystallization of μ-cordierite and tetragonal (t) ZrO/sub 2/. The t-ZrO/sub 2/ crystallized with an irregular dendritic morphology and could be transformed to monoclinic (m) symmetry under certain conditions; the cordierite underwent the μ → α transformation with extended annealing. Heat treatments at 10000C caused crystallization of t-ZrO/sub 2/ rods and spheroids in a cordierite matrix; these ZrO/sub 2/ crystals, however, are resistant to transformation to m-ZrO/sub 2/. The beneficial effects of ZrO/sub 2/ on the fracture toughness of cordierite-based glass-ceramic are described
