The significance of determination the thyroid hormones in the blood of neonatal cord in Yimeng mountain region

Description
Objective: To investigate the significance of determining the various thyroid hormones in the blood of neonatal cord, and to observe the function state of thyroid of neonates in Yimeng mountain region. Methods: Blood thyroid hormones and TSH were determined with RIA (or IRMA) in 2000 neonates of this region at random. Results: In general the blood levels of both TT4 and FT4 in 2000 neonates were within normal range. The levels of TT3 and FT3 were lower, and in one or two cases the values were 0. The TSH were slight higher. There were 72 neonates (3.60%) whose levels of TSH in cord blood were higher than 12.5 mIU/L (X-bar+2s); 21 neonates (1.05%), the levels of TT4 were lower than 36 nmol/L (X-bar-2s); 9 neonates (0.45%), the levels of FT4 were lower than 3.5 pmol/L (X-bar-2s); 6 neonates (0.30%), all of TSH, TT4 and FT4 were abnormal. Conclusion: The levels of TT4, TT3 in cord blood were important marks to show the growth and function of thyroids, and played important roles in observing baby's growth and intellectual development. Determination of free thyroid hormones in cord blood has practical significance for judging the function state of thyroid. There were 0.30% neonates being in hypothyroidism status in the studies
