EUROSAFE forum 2009. Safety implications of an increased demand for nuclear energy

The 11th EUROSAFE Forum for Nuclear Safety held at the Brussels Sheraton on November 2-3, 2009 was attended by approximately 350 guests from 27 nations. The topic of the Forum was ''Safety Implications of an Increased Demand for Nuclear Energy.'' In their welcoming addresses the heads of the host organizations, Benoit De Boeck (Bel V), Jacques Repussard (IRSN), and Lothar Hahn (GRS), stressed the special importance of the European Technical Safety Organization Network (ETSON) for the activities of the technical safety organizations (TSO) in Europe also with a view to the increasing demand for nuclear power. Accordingly, ETSON is to be developed from a rather ''informal grouping'' into a formal organization. Welcoming addresses came from Philippe Jarnet, Director with the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency), Olena Mykolaichuk, Head of the Ukrainian licensing authority, SNRCU, and Yoshihiro Nakagome, Vice President of JNES (Japan Nuclear Energy Safety Organisation). The subsequent plenary lectures reflected the views of the different stakeholder groups, i.e. international organizations, licensees, nuclear authorities, EU, and TSO, about the general topic of the Forum. On the second day of the conference, topical developments and results were presented and discussed in the 5 seminars on - ''Safety of Nuclear Installations - Evaluation'', - ''Safety of Nuclear Installations - Research'', - ''Waste Management and the Environment'', - ''Safeguarding Nuclear Installations and Materials'' and - ''Environmental Protection and Radiation Protection''.
