Extraction of negative ions from a cold cathode panning ion source by sputtering on the surface of solid

  • 1. Beijing Univ. (China). Inst. of Heavy Ion Physics

Description

A pocket cold-cathode PIG ion source with a permanent magnet is successfully developed to produce negative ion beams at Institute of Heavy Ion Physics of Peking University. When gas consumption is less than 20 cm3/h, power consumption is around 50 W and Cs vapour is absent, 60 μA F-, 68 μA Cl- and 39 μA Br- analyzing currents (transmission efficiency is 15%) can be obtained by sputtering NaCl, NaF, NaBr on anti-cathode respectively and some negative ions are gotten from discharge supporting gas as well. Moreover, the effect of different discharge supporting gases on the yield of negative ions are revealed in the experiments
