Acceleration of heavy clusters to MeV energies at the Orsay MP tandem

  • 1. Inst. de Physique Nucleaire, Orsay (France)

Description

Beams of heavy cluster ions have been routinely accelerated by the Orsay MP tandem for the past two years. One can operate the accelerator in the tandem mode, using Cn, Aun, or fullerene beams from the external negative injector, terminal gap stripping and HE magnetic analysis: a flux of 106 to 108 ions/s in the tens of MeV range is then available for experiments. Alternatively, single-ended operation allows higher current (108 to 1010 ions of metallic clusters), using the positive ion source set-up in the terminal with its analysis and injection beam line. Details are given on the terminal lay-out and the characteristics of the beams available in either operating mode. (orig.)
