Composition change of tantalum oxyfluoride melt at electrolysis

Description

Composition changes in the anodic and cathodic zones were studied during electrolysis of melts including K2TaF7, Ta2O5, KF and KCl. The anodic gases are shown to consist of CO and CO2. The anodic current yield is less than 100%. In oxygen-containing melts of tantalum, the chlorine and fluorine ions do not participate in the anodic discharge during electrolysis. Thermodynamic analysis of some possible reactions has shown that the lowest decomposition potential E10730=-0.172 V is exhibited by compound K3TaOF6
