Automatic orbital TIG-welding of small bore austenitic stainless steel tubes for nuclear fuel reprocessing plant

  • 1. British Nuclear Fuels Ltd.

Description

Traditionally, manual welding techniques have been employed for shop and site fabrication of small bore austenitic stainless steel tubes in the nuclear fuel reprocessing plant of British Nuclear Fuels Limited (BNFL). This Paper describes an evaluation programme carried out to develop welding procedures for both 18Cr-13Ni-1Nb and 18Cr-10Ni low carbon stainless steel small bore tubing, the type of equipment used, and the modifications required for application to shop and site environments.
