Biological effects of ozone depletion on the environment of the Antarctic
Description
Due to the effect of the ozone hole, the amount of ultraviolet radiation hitting the surface of the Antarctic has increased by 20 to 200%. Mutagenic and lethal effects of radiation are beginning to show on aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. Mechanisms of vertical migration and production of pigments absorbing uv radiation are developing. Other effects are only assessed; preliminary studies are being made. The so-called Montreal protocol has been signed by many countries to protect stratospheric ozone; Czechoslovakia joined it in 1990. (M.D.). 1 tab., 3 refs
