Search for structure in the p-p annihilation cross-section in the S region

Description
This chapter presents a re-analysis of data on the search for the S meson in -pp annihilation. A new long-target method is used to scan the entire 'S' momentum range (400 to 600 MeV/c) with a single beam momentum setting. The LESB II beam at the Brookhaven AGS was used to give antiprotons of about 600 MeV/c incident on a 1 m. long liquid hydrogen target. The new analysis incorporates improvements in the determination of the vertex position, through adjustment of geometrical parameters to improve the fit to two-track events. The annihilation cross-section for a given momentum is calculated by determining several basic quantities: the number of events at that momentum, the flux of antiprotons at that momentum, and the efficiency of the apparatus at that momentum
