Primary gamma rays with energy 1014-1016 eV and possible sources of cosmic rays in the galaxy

  • 1. Erevan Physics Institute

Description

An analysis of the condition for ultrahigh-energy gamma photons to be absorbed on fossil photons is used in order to establish a firm bound for the distances to possible sources of primary gamma rays with E/sub y/ ≥1015 eV: d≤ 10 kpc. At the same time, the first observational indication is also obtained that ultrahigh-energy cosmic rays are generated in sources of galactic origin. Arguments are advanced to show that the diffuse gamma rays with E/sub y/ ≥ 5 x 1014 eV found with the Tien Shan Extensive Air Showers array are due to the contribution of unresolved discrete sources, and are formed in regions of intense star formation near the Sun
