Elastic scattering of neutrinos and antineutrinos by protons in the Weinberg-Salam theory
Description
We consider the processes #betta#/sub μ/(nu-bar/sub μ/)+p→#betta#/sub μ/ (nu-bar/sub μ/) +p within the framework of the Weinberg-Salam theory. We calculate the cross sections for these processes under various assumptions about the electromagnetic form factors of the nucleon which are consistent with experimental data. We show that in the region of energies of the neutrino (antineutrino) E/sub() nunu-bar/< or =1 GeV the uncertainties in the nucleon form factors practically do not affect the elastic cross sections for scattering of neutrinos (antineutrinos) by nucleons. We also show that the cross section of the process nu-bar/sub μ/+p→nu-bar/sub μ/+p in the region of q2 near q2/sub max/ is very sensitive to the value of the parameter sin2 theta/sub W/, where theta/sub W/ is the Weinberg angle
