Clinical significance of determination of changes of serum CEA, CA19-9 and SS levels after operation in patients with esophageal cancer

Objective: To explore the clinical significance of changes of serum CEA, CA19-9 and somatostatin (SS) levels after operation in patients with esophageal cancer. Methods: Serum CEA, CA19-9 and SS levels were detected with RIA in 32 patients with esophageal cancer both before and after operation as well as in 35 controls. Results: Before operation, the levels of serum CEA, CA19-9 and SS were significantly higher in the patients than those in controls (P<0.01). Serum CEA and CA19-9, SS levels were positively correlated (r=0.5184, 0.6012, P<0.01). Three months after operation, the levels in patients were not significantly different from those in controls (P>0.05). Conclusion: Serum CEA, CA19-9 and SS levels were closely related to the diseases process of esophageal cancer and were of prognostic value. (authors)
