Dumand as muon detector

Description

Recent discussions of the DUMAND project have dealt with the programme of neutrino experiments only. At the same time DUMAND gives a unique possibility for the investigations of cosmic ray muons with energies greater than 1013 eV. The size of the detector allows to measure the muon energy spectrum up to 1015 eV, where the change of the muon spectrum connected with the direct muon production and the break in the primary spectrum at about 3x1015 eV should be observed. The large thickness of the detector makes it possible to use the method of the muon energy measurement based on the multiplicative pair production by muons. The accuracy of about 25% may be obtained with the 1 km water thick detector. The large number of muons penetrating a sensitive volume (approximately 109 per year) gives the possibility of the study of the muon arrival direction anisotropy and the time variation of the muor flux.
