The potential for on-line nuclear orientation experiments with radioactive beams
Description
On-Line Nuclear Orientation (OLNO) has the capability to yield nuclear electromagnetic moments and sophisticated decay process information for isotopes having very modest production rates. Although nuclear relaxation times ultimately restrict the range of accessible nuclides, in favourable cases isotopes close to the proton drip-line can be oriented following implantation in ferromagnetic metals. Thus studies of e.g. ground state single particle configuration and deformation can be carried beyond existing limits. The requirements for successful OLNO experiments using radioactive beams for isotope production are examined. The use of both conventional isotope separation and recoil mass separation are discussed. Interesting nuclides open to experiment are surveyed
