Improved method of oil collection in rivers and channels

Description
A number of scaled-down models of oil collection methods were tested in laboratory open channel equipment to simulate collection of oil spills in channels and rivers. Results were most satisfactory when using a long boom in the center of the channel to direct the flow to the sides, where recirculation zones were created with other booms to trap the oil for removal by oil skimmers. The amount of oil trapped in this manner varied from 13.2 to 28.4 per cent, compared to only 4.5 per cent in the absence of directional booms. 3 refs., 5 figs
