Spectrographic determination of some rare earths in thorium compounds

Description

A method for spectrographic determination of Gd, Sm, Dy, Eu, Y, Yb, Tm and Lu in thorium compounds has been developed. Sensibilities of 0.01 μg rare earths/g Th02 were achieved. The rare earth elements were chromatographycally separated in a nitric acid-ether-cellulose system. The solvent mixture was prepared by dissolving 11% of concentrated nitric acid in ether. The method is based upon the sorption of the rare earths on activated cellulose, the elements being eluted together with 0.01 M HNO3. The retention of the 152,154Eu used as tracer was 99,4%. The other elements showed recoveries varying from 95 to 99%. A direct carrier destillation procedure for the spectrochemical determination of the mentioned elements was used. Several concentrations of silver chloride were used to study the volatility behavior of the rare earths. 2%AgCl was added to the matrix as definite carrier, being lantanum selected as internal standard. The average coefficient of variation for this method was +- -+ 7%. The method has been appleid to the analysis of rare earths in thorium coumpounds prepared by Thorium Purification Pilot Plant at Atomic Energy Institute, Sao Paulo

Abstract (Portuguese)

Apresenta-se um metodo espectroquimico para a determinacao de Gd,Sm, Dy, Eu, Y, Yb, Tm e Lu em compostos de torio, alcancando-se sensibilidades de ate 0,01 μg de terras raras/g de ThO2. Separam-se os lantanidios por cromatografia no sistema celulose-HNO3-eter. Utilizou-se como mistura solvente 11% de acido nitrico em eter. Fixaram-se as terras raras em celulose ativada e fez-se a eluicao com HNO3 0,01 M. A retencao de 152,154Eu usado como tracador foi de 99,4%. Para os demais elementos lantanidicos o grau de recuperacao variou de 95 a 99%. Realizou-se a determinacao espectrografica aplicando-se a tecnica de destilacao fracionada com carreadores. Estudou-se o comportamento de volatizacao dos lantanidios em diversas concentracoes de cloreto de prata utilizado como carreador. Obtiveram-se melhores resultados empregando-se 2% de AgCl sobre a matriz. Calculou-se a precisao do metodo em termos de coeficiente de variacao, que foi aproximadamente +- -+ 7% para a maioria dos elementos analisados. Aplicou-se o metodo para a analise de terras raras em compostos de torio, preparados pela Usina Piloto de Purificacao de Torio do Instituto de Energia Atomica, Sao Paulo
