India opts for nuclear energy

India is the third power producer in the world but still 25% of its population has no access to the grid so the demand is strong. Today nuclear power represents only 2% of the energy mix but Indian authorities want to develop it in order to reach a nuclear capacity of 22.48 GW by 2032 instead of 6.78 GW today. The indian nuclear fleet is composed of 23 operating reactors and 9 reactors are being built. The last unit to be linked to the grid is the Kakrapar-3 reactor (on 10 january 2021), a pressurized heavy water 700 MW reactor. EDF is in negotiation with Nuclear Power Corporation of India (NPCIL) for the construction of 6 reactors based on EPR technology, on the Jaitapur site in the Maharashtra state. (A.C.)
