Hydrodynamic calibration of a meso-scale, wind-wave flume basin for the study of spilled oil

Description
A meso-scale circular flume tank, to be used to study the behaviour of spilled oil and countermeasure technologies, was calibrated. The system was designed to simulate Arctic to tropical conditions, in salt or fresh water. A wind generator was mounted on the system which generated winds up to 25 m/s. Water velocities were measured in three-dimensions. The circular flume tank produced a homogeneous steady-state wave field. It was concluded that by providing control of environmental parameters such as temperature, photolytic flux, salinity, wind speed, wave height and wave period, this flume tank was an effective and reliable tool for the study of spilled oil at sea. 9 refs., 4 tabs., 9 figs
