State of the Japanese nuclear research ship MUTSU

Description
A short introductory comment of the German-Japanese cooperation on the field of nuclear ship propulsion is given, which since several years had led to the development of a nuclear propelled containership with 80 000 shp. Against this background the cooperation with the Japanese was renewed for checking the shield modification of NS MUTSU by GKSS. Before the modification of the shielding is dealt with in more detail the design concept of ship and reactor plant of the vessel is presented. The observed defects in the shielding during the nuclear commissioning of the vessel are discussed as well as the rebuilding concept of the changed shielding incl. the shielding calculations. The constructive modifications have led to reconsiderations of safety aspects for ship and reactor. Finally a short description of the repair site in Sasebo is given and an outlook on the nuclear ship development in Japan. (orig.)
Abstract (German)
Einleitend wird kurz auf die mehrjaehrige deutsch-japanische Zusammenarbeit auf dem Gebiet des Kernenergie-Schiffsantriebes hingewiesen, die zur Entwicklung eines nuklearen Containerschiffes mit 80 000 WPS Antriebsleistung fuehrte. Vor diesem Hintergrund wurde die Zusammenarbeit mit der japanischen Seite bei der Beurteilung der Abschirmungsmodifikation fuer NS MUTSU durch GKSS erneuert. Bevor auf die Modifikation der Abschirmung im Detail eingegangen wird, wird das Entwurfkonzept von Schiff und Reaktoranlage des japanischen KE-Forschungsschiffes MUTSU vorgestellt. Die bei der nuklearen Inbetriebnahme des Schiffes aufgetretenen Maengel in der Abschirmung werden diskutiert und das Umbaukonzept fuer die geaenderte Abschirmung auch rechnerisch behandelt. Die baulichen Aenderungen fuehrten zu Neuueberlegungen der Sichetrheitsaspekte bei Schiff und Reaktor. Die Arbeit schliesst mit einer kurzen Beschreibung des Reparaturplatzes Sasebo und einem Ausblick auf die nukleare Schiffsentwicklung in Japan. (orig.)Additional details
